Clowne at War – World War I

‘Clowne at War’ World War I

Saturday 24th June 2023

Clowne Local History Society had a book launch for a new book about the men and boys named on the Clowne War Memorial from WWI. This has been researched by Rita Mellor and, with additional names and background information added to her original research, is now available. This took place at Clowne Summer Fair at St John’s Church on Saturday 24th June 2023.

There are 105 men and boys named from the First World War, with the youngest aged 17 and the oldest 38.

These men served in 30 different regiments/services and were active across all the areas of the First World War from Gallipoli through France and Belgium with battle names that are now familiar to us – Mons, Ypres, Passchendaele and many more.

It is a story for Clowne families and relatives of the fallen that is at last being told in some detail with many photos of the men culled from newspaper archives and military records.

We hope people will enjoy the attractive setting out of a story that has not been set out for our village and families before. The publication has been made possible by support from Cllr Natalie Hoy, Derbyshire County Council and from Capital Refractories of Clowne.

There is on going research into this area by us and we give our thanks to Barlborough Heritage and Resource Centre, who have strongly supported our research efforts, and potential new names for the War Memorial are still being found and will be documented.

Barlborough Heritage and Resource Centre have researched all the 105 men featured in the booklet. The family histories are available in Ancestry. To access the family histories in Ancestry you need a current subscription and to have purchased the booklet.
