Family History

Clowne Local History Society can help you with your family connections to Clowne and the surrounding area. In researching the men and boys killed in WW1 we have the family histories of the 140 WW1and WW2 servicemen and servicewomen on the memorial. We have also researched virtually all the men from the parish who served in WW1 and survived. We have access to Ancestry.co.uk, FindmyPast.co.uk, Fold3.com and and Britishnewpapersarchive.co.uk.

The family histories of the 140 men and women are all in Ancestry tree called ‘Clowne Memorial’. If you have a valid Ancestry subscription you can obtain access to the tree on purchase of our booklet, ‘Clowne at War – World War 1‘. The booklet was launched on June 24th 2023 at the Clowne Summer Fair.

Ancestry is used to build the family histories. Ancestry and FindmyPast are used as research tools – births, marriages, deaths, census data, etc. Fold3 is used for military records while Britishnewspaperachives is used to find newspaper articles relevant to our research/publications. This data source provides many of photographs of the servicemen killed or wounded.
