Clowne At War, World War II

Description

This, the second book researched by Rita Mellor, tells the stories of the 35 Men and Women from Clowne who gave their lives for our future ( with additional material from the Clowne LHS edit team). The book is deliberately designed to sit alongside our first WW1 publication so these two books add a remarkable insight into Clowne over the two World Wars. Once again we find that our service men and women were active across the whole of the global warfare, and all three of the services. We place the men and women in a timeline of local and world events over the seven calendar years of the war 39-45. Additional story pages tell of the local response with munitions factories being set up, the Home Guard, Bevin Boys, Women at War, and Evacuees arriving from Lowestoft as well as the celebration marking – the end. The book has been supported by – Efficiency East Midlands, Bolsover District Council Grant Award, Jack Crickmore Donation, Cllr Ross Walker Bolsover DC Community Grant.

We acknowledge the input from CWGC site and the IWM photo archive along with all those who gave us photos of their family.
